Un Largo camino: desde el hogar hasta el hospital y la Casa Garrahan

Abstract

En el presente artículo desarrollaremos algunos de los principales resultados obtenidos en el desarrollo de la primera etapa de trabajo de campo (período octubre 2004 - mayo 2005) en el marco de la investigación “La voz de las madres en situaciones límites de la atención pediátrica”. Dos rasgos definen las enfermedades que comprometen en forma severa y prolongada la vida de los pacientes: la duración de la enfermedad (que no se constituye como un momento sino como un evento que puede durar meses, años o la vida entera) y la gestión de la enfermedad (o de la cronicidad) que marca la modificación del trabajo médico e implica no sólo al enfermo sino a toda su familia y a su entorno social. En esta oportunidad, analizaremos los relatos que efectúan las madres que se alojan en la Casa Garrahan acompañando a sus hijos, atendidos en los hospitales pediátricos de la ciudad de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires por patologías severas o a la espera de un trasplante. Como primera aproximación en el análisis de los datos obtenidos, se seleccionó, precisamente, la dimensión objetiva que da cuenta de la gestión de la enfermedad, la enorme multiplicidad de espacios, instituciones, obstáculos, actores, etc. que las familias, niños/as y madres encuentran a lo largo de todo un recorrido que, salvo los casos en que es posible hablar de “cura”, nunca acaba. En dicha dimensión objetiva y a partir de las distintas temáticas que surgen de las entrevistas efectuadas es posible, a su vez, distinguir tres grandes núcleos que hacen a la gestión de enfermedad en este grupo específico: la burocracia, el hospital y la Casa Garrahan.

In the present article we will analyze some of the main results obtained in the first stage (October 2004 to May 2005) of the fieldwork carried out as part of the research work entitled “The voice of mothers in extreme situations in pediatric assistance.” Two features define chronic diseases: the duration of the disease (which is not constituted as a moment but as an event that may last months, years or even a lifetime), and the management of the disease (or management of chronicity), which shapes changes in the medical work and involves not only the patients but also their entire family and social environment. In this sense, and considering the objectives of our exploratory and qualitative investigation, we will analyze the accounts of the mothers who are lodged at Casa Garrahan so that they can be close to their kids. These children are assisted in Buenos Aires City due to severe pathologies, or are on the waiting list for a transplant. In a preliminary analysis of the information obtained, the objective domain of the management of the disease was taken into account: the enormous multiplicity of spaces, institutions, obstacles, actors, etc, that the families, children and mothers encounter along the way, which –except in cases when a cure is possible– is neverending. Considering this objective domain and the different issues that arise from the interviews made, it is possible to distinguish three big areas that deal with the management of this particular domain: bureaucracy, the hospital and Casa Garrahan.
