Delitos y abusos nocturnos en la Castilla urbana bajomedieval

Abstract

Negra y larga era la noche en las ciudades de la Corona de Castilla durante el último siglo de la Edad Media. Frente a lo poco que sabemos sobre la vida nocturna en este período, esta comunicación intenta reconstruir cómo era el universo delictivo y el mundo de los abusos que tenían lugar cuando la noche caía sobre las ciudades. Gente de mal vivir, homicidas, ladrones e impostores encontraron en el tiempo de las tinieblas el momento propicio para transgredir las normas sociales, amparándose siempre en el anonimato que la oscuridad les ofrecía. En esta ocasión, el análisis de la calidad y la cantidad de los delitos y abusos cometidos en el mundo urbano castellano durante el siglo XV se realizará a la luz de un corpus documental variado que incluye desde procesos judiciales hasta cronística de la época. De nuestro estudio se derivará que el peligro era el denominador común de la noche, y aunque las autoridades políticas intervinieron con disposiciones severas para garantizar la seguridad de los ciudadanos, las medidas fueron siempre insuficientes para hacer frente con eficacia a los desafíos delictivos que durante la noche se presentaban.

Long and black was the night in the cities of the Crown of Castile in the last century of the Middle Ages. In spite of what little we know about the nightlife in this period, this paper tries to reconstruct what the criminal world was and the world of the fraud that took place when the night fell upon the cities. People of ill repute, murderers, thieves and impostors found in time of darkness ripe for transgressing social norms, always hiding behind the anonymity that darkness offered. In this talk, we analyze the quality and quantity of crimes and frauds that took place in Castilian urban world in the fifteen century. This study will be based on a documentary corpus that includes a wide variety of sources, ranging from judicial texts to chronicles of the time. We believe that danger was the most frequent factor of the night, and although political authorities severely intervened to ensure the safety of the citizens, those actions turned out to be always inadequate to deal effectively with the criminal challenges presented during the night.
