Al Oeste del Paraíso. Fábrica de estrellas y res publica: límites de la historia en la literatura de Sigüenza y Góngora

Abstract

Encargado de escribir la crónica de la fundación del Real Convento de Jesús María de México, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (1645-1700) no puede sino dar cuenta, en la escritura de Parayso occidental (1684), también de otras cosas y personas que, en su diversidad, ponen en evidencia el complejo y fronterizo espacio en cual convento y escritura convergen. En ese espacio teológico-político, en ese límite delicado pero matriz, surge entonces el problema que hace no sólo a las condiciones de la historia y su escritura (problemas de archivo) sino también a las posibilidades de la literatura y sus límites (problemas de testimonio). Pues donde público y no público, hecho y conjetura, cuerpo y lengua, pueblo y reyes, cielo y tierra se traman inextricables, la simple historia de un convento y sus monjas da lugar a la menos simple historia de aquellas cosas y personas que hacen o no a la historia y, más aún, de aquellas cosas y personas que pueden o no ser parte –en el límite– de la historia.

When commissioned to write the chronicle of the foundation of the Real Convento de Jesús María de México in Parayso occidental (1684), Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (1645-1700) can't but account for other things and people that, in their diversity, show the complex and borderline space where convent and writing converge. In that theological and political space, in that delicate but matrix limit, the problem appears not only of History's conditions and its writing (problems about the archive), but also of literature's possibilities and its limitations (problems about testimony). Because where public and not public, fact and conjecture, body and language, people and kings, heaven and earth intertwine, the simple story of a convent and its nuns leads to the less simple story of those things and people that make History and, more importantly, of those things and people that –in its borders– can or can not be a part of it.
