Dos poetas en Nueva York: Federico García Lorca y Thomas Merton

Abstract

Este artículo busca comprender la conexión que el norteamericano Thomas Merton siente con el poeta español Federico García Lorca, a partir de la consideración de ambos por la ciudad de Nueva York. En determinados textos de Merton y de García Lorca se puede apreciar una cosmovisión común, que se vuelve evidente en la admiración de Merton por el granadino. Ambos escritores experimentaron la embriaguez y la opresión que provoca la ciudad de Nueva York, el contaste entre esa metrópoli y Cuba, y la poesía como espacio de liberación. Cuando Merton leyó a Lorca por primera vez, lo hizo en traducción al inglés. En lecturas posteriores, Merton redescubre la poesía del español como una sinécdoque del hombre moderno y de la poesía contemporánea en castellano, el idioma que llegaría a amar profundamente y de cuya poesía se sentiría tan cerca.

This article aims at understanding the connection that the American poet Thomas Merton felt with the Spanish one Federico García Lorca, based on their consideration of New York City. Exploring the archives may throw light into the attitudes and thoughts they share. The article revisits Poet in New York, the letters that Lorca wrote to his family at the time he started composing the book, and the Conference about it; the article revisits also Thomas Merton’s autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain and some of his letters about New York City. By comparing both authors’ texts, it is possible to notice their common attitude towards the metropolis and the contrast they set between it and Cuba.
