En la Mediterránea, tan lejos del Mediterráneo: la estadía de Lawrence Durrell en Córdoba en 1948

Abstract

Lawrence Durrell constituye una figura central de la literatura inglesa y universal del siglo XX, cuya obra representa un valioso acervo para observar las transformaciones del orden global a partir de la segunda guerra mundial, especialmente en torno al Mediterráneo y Oriente Medio. Su trayectoria personal y como diplomático del Imperio Británico lo ubicó en múltiples escenarios y situaciones. De allí que a lo largo de su vasta producción aparezcan tematizadas problemáticas tan actuales como las identidades múltiples, la convivencia interreligiosa e intercultural y la emergencia del mundo poscolonial. Sin embargo a lo largo de este amplio recorrido aún permanecen en la sombra algunos momentos específicos de su biografía. Es el caso de su llegada a Córdoba para dirigir el British Council en 1948. Los relatos de amigos y testigos, junto a algunas referencias en su propia obra, nos ayudan a echar un poco de luz sobre esta presencia fugaz pero intensa.

Lawrence Durrell is a central figure in English and universal literature of the XX century, whose work represents a valuable collection to observe the transformations of the global order since the Second World War, especially around the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. His personal career and as a diplomat of the British Empire placed him in multiple scenarios and situations. Hence, throughout his vast production, thematic issues appears so contemporary like multiple identities, interreligious and intercultural coexistence and the emergence of the postcolonial world. However, along this extensive journey, some specific moments of his biography still remain in the shadows. This is the case of his arrival to Córdoba in order to lead the British Council in 1948. The friends and witnesses chronocicles, together with some references in his own work, help us to enlight this fleeting but intense presence.
