Tucumán y la revolución tecnológica. El caso del Ingenio Lastenia hacia fines del siglo XIX

Abstract

Hacia fines del siglo XIX, la provincia de Tucumán se vio atravesada por una serie de cambios estructurales que llegaron a convertirla en uno de los polos industriales más importante del país, siendo los referentes más paradigmáticos del proceso, la llegada del ferrocarril en 1876 y la consiguiente modernización generalizada de los ingenios azucareros que, a partir de entonces, se hicieron con las tecnologías más avanzadas de la época. En el presente trabajo, analizamos una serie de cambios tecnológicos experimentados por la industria azucarera de la provincia con posterioridad a 1876, para lo que tomamos como referente al ingenio Lastenia.En función del análisis de diversos aspectos característicos de esta etapa en Lastenia y otras unidades productivas, proponemos que luego de la llegada del ferrocarril, Tucumán fue protagonista de una Revolución Tecnológica. Un proceso que significó el inicio de una nueva fase para el desarrollo del capitalismo en la provincia y trajo aparejado un ciclo de transformaciones que dejan sentir su eco aún en el siglo XXI.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Province of Tucumán underwent a series of structural changes that turned it into one of the most important industrial centres in the country. One of the most paradigmatic references of the process was the arrival of the railroad in 1876 and the consequent general modernization of the sugar mills, which from then on were equipped with the most advanced technologies of the time. In this paper, we analyse a series of technological changes experienced by the province’s sugar industry after 1876, taking as a reference the Lastenia sugar mill. Based on the analysis of different aspects characteristic of this stage in Lastenia and other productive units, we propose that, after the arrival of the railway, Tucumán was the protagonist of a Technological Revolution. This process meant the beginning of a new phase for the development of capitalism in the province and brought with it a cycle of transformations that are still felt in the 21st century
