Abducción e inferencia a la mejor explicación: Criterios para su delimitación metodológica

Abstract

El artículo analiza críticamente las nociones de abducción y de inferencia a la mejor explicación a los fines de mostrar por qué, pese a que han sido frecuentemente confundidas, no son semánticamente equivalentes. Además, se propone mostrar que el sistema inferencial elucidado por Charles Peirce constituye un modelo más adecuado para el proceder metodológico de la actividad científica que el de la inferencia a la mejor explicación sostenido por algunos autores contemporáneos, como Peter Lipton. Este análisis comparativo concluye con la postulación de tres criterios distintivos que podrían servir para repensar no sólo las diferencias conceptuales entre ambas categorías sino también las diferentes implicancias metodológicas que cada uno de los modelos tiene para el ámbito de la investigación científica.

The article critically analyzes the notions of abduction and inference to the best explanation in order to show why, although they have been frequently confused, they are not semantically equivalent. In addition, it is proposed to show that the inferential system elucidated by Charles Peirce constitutes a more adequate model for the methodological procedure of scientific activity tan that of inference to the best explanation supported by some contemporary authors, such as Peter Lipton. This comparative analysis concludes with the postulation of three distinctive criteria that could serve to rethink not only the conceptual differences between both categories but also the different methodological implications that each of the models has for the field of scientific research.
