Est (…) virtuti etiam in lectulo locus: una nueva forma de ejemplaridad en Sen., Ep. LXXVII Y LXXVIII

Abstract

El presente artículo sostiene que en las Ep. LXXVII y LXXVIII Séneca utiliza el discurso ejemplar críticamente con el objetivo de mostrar que la evaluación moral de una acción no es unívoca, lo cual habilita vías alternativas para convertirse en un héroe ejemplar. En particular, la Ep. LXXVIII enfatiza cómo la capacidad de superar las molestias físicas y psicológicas de una enfermedad crónica puede permitirle al proficiens estoico alcanzar un estatus ejemplar. La narratio autobiográfica situada al comienzo de esta carta guía la atención del lector hacia el ego epistolar en tanto exemplum viviente de lo que la epistula defiende.

This paper argues that in Ep. LXXVII and LXXVIII Seneca intends to use exemplary discourse critically in order to show that the moral evaluation of an action is not univocal, which leaves the door open for the possibility to conceive alternative ways of becoming an exemplary hero. Ep. LXXVIII places particular emphasis on how the capacity to overcome the physical and psychological inconveniences of a chronic illness can help the Stoic proficiens to achieve exemplary status. The autobiographical narratio situated at the beginning of this letter guides the reader’s attention to the epistolary ego as a living exemplum of what the epistula defends.
