El motivo del iter durum en el centón cristiano De Ecclesia

Abstract

Al describir el descenso de Cristo al infierno en el centón virgiliano-cristiano De Ecclesia, el autor anónimo establece una evidente relación intertextual con la catábasis de Eneas en el sexto libro de la Eneida. Como resultado, Jesús asume un matiz heroico, vinculado con el motivo del iter durum. Sin embargo, al narrar su retorno (como resucitación) el centonista se aparta de Eneas y suma un nuevo modelo intertextual: Apolo, cuya naturaleza más madura ayuda a circunscribir los parámetros de una figura ejemplar, superior a los héroes de la herencia pagana.

While describing the descent of Jesus to the netherworld in the virgilian-Christian cento De Ecclesia, the anonymous author establishes a clear intertextual connection with Aeneas’ catabasis in the sixth book of the Aeneid. As a result, Jesus is seen in a heroic light, related to the iter durum motif. However, when narrating his return (in the form of his resurrection), the centonist moves away from Aeneas and into a new intertextual model: Apollo, whose more mature traits help define the parameters of an exemplar figure, superior to the heroes of the pagan heritage.
