This paper summarizes the main guidelines of my thesis defended in December 2008. The theme of this research focuses on medical practices and discourse about physical ailments in the urban area of †the city of Tilcara (Jujuy, Argentina). We can see that there are at least two therapeutic practices in Tilcara deeply rooted in the society as a whole: biomedicine and alternative medicine. Biomedicine works in this location as hegemonic medical practice, but this does not prevent that other non hegemonic and previous practices can continue. It is possible to see that both therapeutic practices coexist and interact. From this context we consider it appropriate to postulate, as an empirical generalization, the presence of a «therapeutic field» in Tilcara. Based on therapeutic practices in Tilcara work as a «field», the questions arise that guide this research: What leads people in Tilcara to use a particular therapeutic practice? What are the variables involved in their medical choices? In order to answer these questions, the analysis is oriented toward the testimonies and perspectives of the various social actors involved in the doc- tor-healer-patient, thence central objective is proposed: study what variables influence the choice of the people of Tilcara in opting for a particular place of therapeutic knowledge, either hegemonic (hospital, doctors, etc..), subaltern (healers, bone setters, other) or results from a combination of both
