Un intervalo hechizado: Calveyra lee a Hudson fuera del tiempo

Abstract

A fines de 1989 y desde su residencia francesa, Arnaldo Calveyra escribe Allá en lo verde Hudson, recuperando extensos fragmentos de Allá lejos y hace tiempo (1918) y volviéndose alternativamente un copista, un coleccionista, un excavador y un huésped de la escritura de W. H. Hudson. Como se verá, el vínculo entre ambos escenifica las tensiones entre extranjería, (in)migración y hospitalidad. A partir de la posición excéntrica que comparten (escriben desde metrópolis culturales sin asimilarse por completo a ellas) Hudson le permite a Calveyra regresar y recalibrar la memoria del lugar natal a partir de una dislocación temporal (desde 1989 al siglo XIX) y espacial (entre París y el campo argentino), que deviene fragmentaria escritura autobiográfica de su propia infancia, y reactualizar además la memoria del paisaje nacional ensayada por el escritor inglés como una forma de resistir el devaluado presente político de Argentina.

At the end of 1989 and from his French residence, Arnaldo Calveyra writes Allá en lo verde Hudson, recovering extensive fragments of Far Away and Long Ago (1918) and becoming alternately a copyist, a collector, an excavator and a guest of W. H. Hudson’s writing. As will be seen, the link between both books stages the tensions between foreigner, (in)migration and hospitality. Considering the “eccentric” position they share (they both write from cultural metropolises without fully assimilating to them) Hudson allows Calveyra to “return” and recalibrate the memory of his birthplace from a temporal (from 1989 to the 19th century) and spatial dislocation (between Paris and the Argentine countryside), which becomes fragmentary autobiographical writing of his own childhood. That also enables him to update the memory of the national landscape practiced by the English writer as a way of resisting the devalued political present in Argentina.
