Costo laboral y ganancia empresaria en la Argentina de principios del siglo XX: El caso de los ingenios azucareros del norte del país

Abstract

Este trabajo apunta a indagar sobre aspectos cuantitativos de la mano de obra en relación a las empresas azucareras del norte del país a principios del siglo XX. La principal hipótesis que sostuvo hasta momento la historiografía referente al tema, es que gran parte de la ganancia de los ingenios se explica por el bajo costo de la fuerza de trabajo indígena y campesina. Por el contrario, a partir de nuestra investigación, observamos que estos trabajadores implicaban un gran costo en el funcionamiento de estas empresas. Sin embargo debido a aspectos más estructurales del capitalismo argentino, su empleo de debía más a una necesidad que a una estrategia de rentabilidad. Con este trabajo pretendemos aportar a las actuales discusiones sobre desigualdad y el desarrollo económico argentino a lo largo del tiempo, ofreciendo elementos para incluir en el debate a las economías regionales y poder de esta manera tener una visión más de conjunto de la historia argentina.

The objective of this work is to investigate the quantitative aspects of the work force in relation to the sugar companies in the north of the country at the beginning of the 20th century. The main hypothesis held by the historiography until now is that a large part of the benefit of the mills is explained by the low cost of indigenous and peasant labor. On the contrary, from our research, we observed that these workers implied a great cost in the operation of these companies. However, due to more structural aspects of Argentine capitalism, its use was due more to a need than to a profitability strategy. With this work we intend to contribute to the current discussions on inequality and Argentine economic development over time, offering elements to include regional economies in the debate and thus be able to have a more global vision of Argentine history.
