Abstract

El ensayo crítico ofrece una presentación general de la estructura y los argumentos de la obra, en una primera sección, y luego, en las tres sucesivas, las diferentes perspectivas sobre las que se organiza: la nueva historia cultural de la guerra, los estudios subalternos y un enfoque comparativo. Por último, ensayamos algunos balances sobre su aporte a cada campo, pero también sobre el impacto que puede tener ese cruce de enfoques e historiografías en los estudios actuales sobre la era de la construcción nacional en Hispanoamérica.

This article is a critical essay on The Dead March… by Peter Guardino. It discusses the main arguments of the book and its connections to the historiographic agenda of Latin American studies. It argues that the book mainly articulates three approaches: first, the new social and cultural history of war; secondly, the social history “from below” or Subaltern Studies; and, finally, the approach of comparative history. Such combination of perspectives provides an attractive example of a social history of politics.
