Corazón mestizo de Pedro Juan Gutiérrez y La Catedral de los Negros de Marcial Gala: dos intervenciones de la narrativa cubana reciente en el debate racial

Abstract

Este artículo propone la lectura de dos obras de la literatura cubana reciente como un ejercicio reflexivo en torno a la problemática racial. Ambas, publicadas en las primeras décadas del nuevo siglo, coinciden en instalar, incluso desde sus títulos, preguntas en torno a la raza. Por un lado, Corazón mestizo. El delirio de Cuba de Pedro Juan Gutiérrez trae como interrogante la actualidad y pertinencia del concepto de mestizaje como definidor de la nacionalidad en pleno contexto de globalización y de supuesta desintegración de las identidades fijas y compactas que caracterizan al pensamiento moderno. Por el otro, La catedral de los negros de Marcial Gala compone una incómoda definición con la cual parecen ser despertados antiguos fantasmas que se creían extintos en la isla. De este modo, nos interesa indagar sobre las huellas y señales que cada una de las narrativas despliega en torno al tema teniendo en cuenta, por un lado, las peculiaridades de la historia del racismo y el debate racial en Cuba; por otro, la particular actualización y enfoque de la problemática en cada una de ellas.

This article proposes the analysis of two works of recent Cuban literature as a reflexive exercise on racial issues. Both, published in the first decades of the 21st century, coincide in installing, since their titles, questions about the race. On the one hand, Corazón mestizo. El delirio de Cuba by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez brings the concept of miscegenation as a definition of nationality in the context of globalization and the supposed disintegration of the fixed and compact identities that have been designing the modern thought. On the other hand, Marcial Gala’s Catedral de los negros composes an uncomfortable definition with which old ghosts that were supposed to be extinct on the island seem to be awakened. In this way, we are interested in inquiring about the traces and signs that those narratives display around the racial subject, considering the peculiarities of the history of racism and racial debate in Cuba; and also the peculiarity of each book.
