Recording the war effort: immigrant communities in Latin America and the memory of the Great War

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the initiatives undertaken by someimmigrant communities residing in Latin America to record theirmobilisation around the First World War. After the armistice,European communities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico,Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and other countries gathered detailedinformation about their activities during the conflict, published asprofusely illustrated books of remembrance, offered to their governmentsas proof of their loyalty. The article intends to establishthe peculiar nature of these publications as records of the wareffort, and analyse the agents and processes of their elaboration,and their role as commemorative but also as archival documents.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar las iniciativas emprendidas por algunas comunidades de inmigrantes residentes en América Latina para registrar su movilización en torno a la Primera Guerra Mundial. Después del armisticio, las comunidades europeas de Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, México, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay y otros países recopilaron información detallada sobre sus actividades durante el conflicto, publicadas como libros de recuerdo profusamente ilustrados, ofrecidos a sus gobiernos como prueba de su lealtad. El artículo pretende establecer la peculiaridad de estas publicaciones como registro del esfuerzo bélico, y analizar los agentes y procesos de su elaboración, y su papel como documentos conmemorativos pero también de archivo.
