Cartographies and characterization of agro-ecological experiences in the Horticultural Belt of General Pueyrredon District

Abstract

En consonancia con los cambios en el modelo productivo a nivel regional y con las tensiones y controversias que atraviesan la actividad hortícola en las áreas de interfaz urbano-rural de Mar del Plata (Partido de General Pueyrredon, Buenos Aires, Argentina) desde hace dos décadas, emergen producciones alternativas. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo localizar geográficamente y caracterizar experiencias hortícolas agroecológicas -a escala comercial- del Partido de General Pueyrredon en 2020, para luego realizar una primera aproximación hacia la tipificación de los productores. Para alcanzar este objetivo se realizaron entrevistas estructuradas a productores y referentes de la actividad, mediante la estrategia de muestreo “bola de nieve” y los resultados fueron procesados mediante un Sistema de Información Geográfica (Qgis). Existe una diversidad de productores “alternativos” que en principio pueden caracterizarse en dos grandes grupos: “productores agroecológicos” y “productores de bajo impacto ambiental”. Sus principales diferencias se manifiestan en las motivaciones que revelan para producir, que son verificadas en las prácticas productivas principalmente y en la estrategia de mercado. Identificar a estos productores alternativos permite profundizar en el conocimiento de las prácticas que están teniendo trascendencia en la región, y también en el país, promovidas desde políticas específicas.

According with the processes of transformation of the production model at regional level, and with the tensions and controversies that pierce the horticultural activity in the urban-rural interface areas of Mar del Plata (District of General Pueyrredon, Buenos Aires, Argentina) throughout two decades, emerging experiences, characterized by the implementation of productive practices, alternative to the conventional model, have appeared. This paper sets out the interdisciplinary and inter-institutional experience of building a geo-referenced database of "alternative" horticultural productions to the conventional model - on a commercial scale - in the General Pueyrredon District, presenting a preliminary characterization of them. To achieve this objective, structured interviews were conducted with producers and people of reference in the activity, using the "snowball" methodology, and the results were processed using a Geographic Information System (Qgis). There is a diversity of "alternative" producers that can at first be characterized in two large groups: "agroecological producers" and "low environmental impact producers". Their main differences are established by the motivations revealed when producing, which can be verified mainly in their production practices and market strategies. Identifying these alternative producers allows us to deepen our knowledge of the practices that are being significant in the region, as well as in the country, which are promoted through specific policies.
