Green biocides to control biodeterioration in materials science and the example of preserving World Heritage Monuments

Abstract

This work is focused on materials that can provide solutions to biodeterioration by synthesizing hygienic paints with antimicrobial additives, such as Ag inclusion in silica-based materials. The protection of different World Heritage Monuments is taken as an example. The link between humanistic disciplines and the natural sciences is suggested as a way to better appreciate human's surrounding environment and to better connecting different worldviews.
