Libertad, poder y cuerpo: La crítica de Judith Butler a Hannah Arendt

Abstract

En este trabajo analizaremos la crítica de Judith Butler a Hannah Arendt. Butler afirma que la estricta distinción entre espacio privado y espacio público en la obra de Arendt tiene como consecuencia la negación del cuerpo en la política. Aquella distinción impediría analizar manifestaciones, protestas y ocupación del espacio público como formas contemporáneas de hacer política, ya que se niega el hecho de que, en las calles, los cuerpos lleven adelante una performatividad específica, por la cual se los hace hablar políticamente a través de su resistencia y persistencia en el espacio público. Intentaremos mostrar que las limitaciones que Butler observa en la teoría arendtiana responden en realidad al interés de esta por recuperar el verdadero sentido político de la libertad en un mundo postotalitario.

In this paper we analyze Judith Butler's critique of Hannah Arendt. Butler claims that the strict distinction between private space and public space in Arendt's work results in the negation of the body in politics. This distinction prevents the analysis of demonstrations, protests, and occupation of public space as contemporary forms of doing politics, since it denies the fact that the bodies in the streets are carrying out a specific performative, in which they speak politically through their resistance and persistence in the public space. We will try to show that the limitations Butler observes in Arendt’s thought actually respond to her interest in recovering the true political meaning of freedom in a post-totalitarian world.
