"Maravilla, maravilla. Mbaé motepá?": Las adivinanzas paraguayas de Robert Lehmann-Nitsche

Abstract

En 1911, durante un viaje en tren entre las ciudades paraguayas de Encarnación y Asunción, el etnólogo alemán Robert Lehmann-Nitsche recoge una serie de 17 adivinanzas en guaraní y español nunca publicadas en sus trabajos. Estos materiales, que han permane- cido hasta el día de hoy en forma de notas manuscritas, vienen a complementar los textos ya registrados por él mismo en Adivinanzas rioplatenses (1911b), obra esencial para el estudio y el conocimiento de la literatura oral sudamericana de inicios del siglo XX. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el repertorio de adivinanzas en lengua guaraní manuscritas no publicadas recogidas por el etnólogo alemán y explorar los modos en los que, a través de estos textos, se configuraban las prácticas lingüísticas de la población guaraní hablante del Paraguay de la época. La importancia de estos textos radica en su retórica particular, que combina lo lúdico y lo humorístico y que encarna un discurso social de lo cotidiano en la sociedad paraguaya de comienzos del siglo XX.

During a train trip between the Paraguayan cities of Encarnación and Asunción in 1911, the German ethnologist Robert Lehmann-Nitsche collected a series of 17 riddles in Guarani and Spanish never published in his works. These materials, which to this day have remained in the form of handwritten notes, complement the texts already recorded in Adivinanzas rioplatenses (1911b), an essential work for the study of South American oral literature at the beginning of the 20th century. The aim of this paper is to analyze the repertoire of unpublished and handwritten Guarani riddles collected by the German ethnologist and to explore the ways in which these texts influenced the linguistic practices of the Guaraní-speaking population of Paraguay at the time. The importance of these texts lies in their particular rhetoric that combines the playful and the humorous and embodies a social discourse of the daily life of Paraguayan society at the beginning of the 20th century.
