Resumen
Biological diversity, or biodiversity, is defined as the variety and variability of living beings and the ecological complex they are part of (Wheeler 1990). One of these three components, the number of species (variety) recognized fluctuates between 1.5 and 1.75 million (Crisci 2006). A little over a million of these are animals and 96% of those animals belong to the group traditionally called “invertebrates”.
