El conflicto y la institución: Claude Lefort, lector de Nicolás Maquiavelo

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es indagar cómo la interpretación que Claude Lefort hace en el período 1950-1972 de la obra de Maquiavelo influye en sus escritos posteriores a través de un objetivo doble. Por un lado, da cuenta de cómo se da la articulación entre su teoría de la democracia moderna –y la indeterminación que le es consustancial– y la noción maquiaveliana de república; y, por otro lado, da cuenta de cómo se ocluye, en algún punto, la importancia que tienen los liderazgos personales para Maquiavelo para pensar los regímenes políticos. Este objetivo doble está atravesado por la siguiente hipótesis de lectura: Maquiavelo es un insumo fundamental para reflexionar sobre la teoría lefortiana de democracia, tanto por aquello que Lefort recupera de Maquiavelo como por aquello que descarta.

The aim of this article is to investigate how Lefort’s interpretation of Machiavelli’s works, during the period 1950-1972, influences his later writings. This will be done through a double objective: Firstly, Lefort gives an account of the relationship that exists between his theory of modern democracy –and the indeterminacy that is consubstantial– and the Machiavellian notion of the Republic; and, on the other hand, how the importance of personal leadership for Machiavelli to think the political regimes is occluded. This double objective is crossed by the following reading hypothesis: Machiavelli is a fundamental contribution to reflect on the lefortian theory of democracy, both for what Lefort takes from Machiavelli and for what he dismisses.
