Revisitando el debate sobre el título "ecuménico" durante el pontificado de Gregorio Magno

Abstract

El presente artículo se propone revisitar la discusión sobre la utilización del título “ecuménico” por el obispo de Constantinopla durante el pontificado de Gregorio Magno (590-604). En primer lugar, se realiza una descripción de los hechos tal como son conocidos gracias al epistolario de Gregorio Magno. En segundo lugar, se analizan algunos aspectos del debate: el significado del término “ecuménico” en época de Gregorio Magno, y la interpretación que Gregorio hace de la disputa, así como las consecuencias eclesiológicas que el obispo romano desprende de su posición. Por medio de este ejercicio, el artículo contribuye a realizar una sistematización y análisis del conflicto que ayuda además a comprender la forma en que el pontificado de Gregorio debe ser abordado desde la historiografía

The present article revisits the dispute over the “ecumenical” title by the Bishop of Constantinople during the pontificate of Gregory the Great (590604). Firstly, the article provides the facts as they are known thanks to the epistles of Gregory the Great. Secondly, it deals with some aspects of the debate: the meaning of the term in the time of Gregory the Great, and the interpretation that Gregory made of the dispute, as well as the ecclesiological consequences that the Roman bishop derived from his position. Through this exercise, the article contributes to a systematization and analysis of the conflict that helps to understand the way in which Gregory’s pontificate should be approached from a historiographical point of view.
