De la necesidad de un Dios providente para la organización de polis en el Theophrastus redivivus

Abstract

El Theophrastus redivivus, escrito en 1659 por un autor anónimo y considerado un compendio de las doctrinas de los libertinos eruditos del siglo XVII, plantea, entre otras cosas, el papel relevante de la religión en la organización política.En este sentido, el presente escrito muestra la importancia decisiva tanto de la religión como de la idea de providencia en la fundación de toda organización política. Asimismo, pone de relieve, en el pensamiento del autor anónimo, la distinción entre verdad y utilidad. La verdad, que en esencia se identifica con el ateísmo, solo es cultivada por un grupo de sabios al margen de la organización política; la utilidad se refiere a un conjunto de afirmaciones (por ejemplo, la idea de Dios, la idea de providencia, etc.) que, aunque son absolutamente falsas, son necesarias para la constitución y existencia de la organización política.

The Theophrastus Redivivus, written in 1659 by an anonymous author and considered a compendium of the doctrines of the Learned Libertines of the seventeenth century, raises —among other things— the relevant role of religion in political organization. In this sense, this article explores the decisive importance of both religion and the idea of Providence in the foundation of every political organization. It also highlights, in the anonymous author's thought, the distinction between truth and utility. On the one hand, the truth —which is identified with atheism—, is only cultivated by a group of scholars outside the political organization. Utility, on the other hand, refers to a set of affirmations that, although they are absolutely false, are necessary for the constitution and existence of political organization (i.e., the idea of God and the idea of Providence).
