La iconografía de los primeros mártires jesuitas de América: La validación de la presencia jesuítica en América y el accionar de los bandeirantes paulistas

Abstract

Los primeros jesuitas caídos por muerte violenta en América, fueron los coadjutores portugueses Pedro Correia y João de Sousa, en fecha imprecisa de fines del año 1554. La noticia conmocionó a la Compañía de Jesús, a partir de la información inicial del P. José de Anchieta, que obtuvo de testigos y elevó a San Ignacio. Sus muertes constituyeron en aquel momento la validación de la presencia de la Compañía de Jesús en América, aunque la historia no dejó de ser utilizada ideológicamente en distintas circunstancias y épocas. Junto con los escritos y para completar estos “sorprendentes ejemplos de santidad”, aparecieron las representaciones iconográficas como la de la portada del libro del P. Pierre du Jarric (1610) y la tradicional obra del bohemio Matthias Tarner (1675), aunque alejados del relato de Anchieta, pero que sirvieron iconográficamente en diferentes épocas que incluyen el cielorraso de la sacristía de la catedral de Bahía a fines del siglo XVII y la iglesia de Santa Cecilia en los comienzos del siglo XX. De tal manera que con este trabajo queremos resaltar con un ejemplo emblemático, los usos diferentes que se les confiere a las imágenes en distintas épocas y de acuerdo a tales o cuales conveniencias.

The first Jesuits to die a violent death in America were the Portuguese coadjutors Pedro Correia and João de Sousa, on a vague date at the end of 1554. The news shocked the Society of Jesus, based on the initial information of Fr. José de Anchie-ta, which he obtained from witnesses and raised St. Ignatius. Their deaths constituted in that moment the validation of the presence of the Society of Jesus in America, even if the history did not stop being used ideologically in different circumstances and times. Along with the writings and to complete these "surprising examples of sanctity", iconographic representations appeared such as that on the cover of the book by Fr. Pierre du Jarric (1610) and the traditional work of the Bohe-mian Matthias Tarner (1675), although far from the Anchie-ta story, but which served icon-ographically in different periods including the ceiling of the sacristy of the Bahia cathedral at the end of the 17thcentury and the church of St. Cecilia at the beginning of the 20th cen-tury. Therefore, with this work we want to highlight, with an emblematic example, the dif-ferent uses given to the images in different periods and according to such or such conven-ience.
