La invención de la «humanidad» en la historiografía europea del siglo XX: sobre el tratamiento de los prisioneros de guerra en el mundo helenístico

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar la invención historiográfica entre 1920 y 1970 de la idea de humanización de la guerra helenística, específicamente en relación con el trato dispensado a los prisioneros de guerra durante dicho periodo histórico. Se busca, por un lado, vincular esta construcción historiográfica con el presente de los historiadores, que escribían entre ambas guerras mundiales y, por el otro, con la pervivencia de una mirada eurocéntrica, que establecía un vínculo progresivo especial entre la experiencia histórica griega y la europea moderna. El estudio de otras prácticas de la guerra en el contexto cultural más amplio del Mediterráneo oriental antiguo permitirá finalmente poner en cuestión la idea de excepcionalidad griega helenística en el intento por moderar y regular la violencia bélica.

My aim in this article is to study the historiographical invention between 1920 and 1970 of the idea of a move towards humanising Hellenistic warfare, specifically in relation to the treatment given to prisoners of war during this historical period. I shall seek to link this historiographical construction with the contemporary context of the historians who wrote in the interwar period, and with the survival of a Eurocentric view that established a special continuity between the historical experiences of ancient Greece and modern Europe. Through an examination of other warfare practices in the broader cultural context of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean, I shall conclude by calling into question the very idea of Hellenistic Greek exceptionalism in attempting to moderate and regulate violence in warfare.
