Espacios rurales y espacios urbanos en la teoría social clásica

Abstract

Este artículo expone una propuesta de recuperación de los usos conceptual, explicativo de una dicotomía clásica de los estudios en ciencias sociales: rural y urbano. Son muchos los caminos posibles para una tarea como ésta, pero una vía que hemos encontrado iluminadora de los avatares del significado y usos de estos conceptos es justamente que han sido muy claros y precisos en los inicios de los estudios sociales hoy llamados “clásicos” y se han sostenido en el tiempo con variadas interpretaciones, pero con un marcado arraigo en esos orígenes. Estas referencias a usos y concepciones son las que han contribuido con la construcción de tradiciones en el pensamiento social de occidente moderno. Reponer esos recorridos, comprender sus inicios y necesidades es un camino que permite reconocer las tensiones, contradicciones, complementaciones y, a veces, oposiciones entre conceptos que hoy agrupan heterogeneidades, diversidades y conservan algunas de las características con las que fueron entendidos. Por ello, nos proponemos condensar una lectura de la interpretación de esta dicotomía en el trabajo de algunos de los fundadores del pensamiento social occidental, que han vertebrado la teoría social y estudiado los profundos, y muchas veces violentos, cambios que condujeron a comprender al capitalismo y sus diversas manifestaciones. Recuperar, entonces, este recorrido conceptual permite sostener y comprender las críticas a la estrechez que hoy día debatimos y que caracteriza a las miradas dicotómicas de los mundos sociales, observación que no escapa al par urbano-rural.

This article exposes a proposal of recovery of the conceptual, explanatory uses of a classic dichotomy of studies in social sciences: rural and urban. There are many possible ways for a task like this, but a way that we have found illuminating the avatars of the meaning and uses of these concepts is precisely that they have been very clear and precise at the beginning of social studies today called "classics" and They have been sustained in time with varied interpretations, but with a strong roots in those origins. These references to uses and conceptions are what have contributed to the construction of traditions in the social thought of the modern West. Replacing these paths, understanding their beginnings and needs is a way to recognize the tensions, contradictions, complements and, sometimes, oppositions between concepts that today group heterogeneities, diversities and preserve some of the characteristics with which they were understood. Therefore, we propose to condense a reading of the interpretation of this dichotomy in the work of some of the founders of Western social thought, who have vertebrated social theory and studied the deep, and often violent, changes that led to understand capitalism and its various manifestations. Recovering, then, this conceptual journey allows us to sustain and understand the criticisms of the narrowness that we are debating today and that characterizes the dichotomous views of social worlds, an observation that does not escape the urbanrural pair.
