dc.description.abstract
This chapter aims to show that Socrates is the answer to the most importantquestion of Leo Strauss? work: is philosophy still possible and necessary? Also, Itattempts to demonstrate that Strauss? heterodox interpretation of classical sourcessheds new light on philosophy and on the figure of Socrates.Using Aristophanes, Plato and Xenophon as his fundamental sources, Straussfinds in the elusive figure of Socrates the main features of a particular kind ofphilosophy that differs from the one that has been repeatedly declared dead inmodernity. According to Strauss, unlike modern philosophy, Socratic philosophy isnot only possible but can also be beneficial for the present. But what Strauss discovers in Socrates? legacy is not a particular answer tocertain problems, a defined doctrine or some specific theoretical ideas. Rather, whatStrauss recognizes in Socrates is an enigma capable of inspiring a powerfulphilosophical practice that could be useful to face two of the most importantchallenges of our time: dogmatism and nihilism. The model of this philosophicalpractice is to be found in Plato's dialogues and Xenophon?s writings, that, in Strauss?non-traditional interpretation, respond to the mocking portrait offered by Aristophanesand present instead a shining and lasting example.
