Magia y milagro al auxilio de la virtud femenina en dos relatos castellanos de principios del siglo XIV (Otas de Roma y Cuento de una Santa Enperatrís)

Abstract

"Otas de Roma" y el "Cuento de una santa enperatrís" son dos de los relatos que integran el manuscrito escurialense h-I-13; debido a su estructura y su temática, ambos pueden ser considerados romances hagiográficos. Las protagonistas de uno y otro son reinas sumamente hermosas que se ven forzadas a atravesar una serie de peripecias adversas que atentan contra su castidad; logran preservarla, no obstante, gracias a la concurrencia de su virtud, la magia, el milagro y el auxilio de Dios y la Virgen. El objetivo del presente trabajo es examinar la forma en que se integran los elementos sobrenaturales y maravillosos en estos romances, donde uno y otro orden tienden a contaminarse y confundirse. Esta mixtura particular es sin dudas uno de los aspectos de la hibridez, y mutua fecundación, entre novela de aventuras y hagiografía que se realiza en el códice, y de un modo particular en estos dos relatos

Otas de Roma and the Cuento de una santa enperatrís are two of the tales of the manuscript h-I-13 of El Escorial; due to their structure and their content, both can be considered hagiographical romances. Their protagonists are extremely beautiful queens who are forced to go through a series of adverse incidents that threaten their chastity. They manage to preserve it, however, thanks to the concurrence of their virtue, magic, miracle and the help of God and the Virgin. The aim of this study is to examine the way in which supernatural and wonderful elements are integrated in these romances, where the two orders tend to become contaminated and confused. This particular mixture is undoubtedly one of the aspects of the hybridity and cross-fertilization between hagiography and adventure novel that takes place in the codex, and in a special way in these two stories
