Delatando el yo en el otro Tomás Sánchez Dávila y su compuesto eremítico-misional en la Vida, Virtvdes y Milagros de la Bienaventvrada Virgen Teresa de Iesvs (1606)

Abstract

El presente artículo se adentra en la prosa hagiográfica que Tomás Sánchez Dávila (1564-1627) dedicara a la visionaria castellana Teresa de Ávila (1515-1582) y viera la luz pública en 1606. Apartándonos de una calificación realizada hace ya algunas décadas que leía esa obra como deformación a-histórica de la figura histórica de Teresa, proponemos observar aquella propaganda confesional con otro enfoque. Siguiendo algunos lineamientos historiográficos recientes, nuestro trabajo no se detendrá en los actos de la Santa, sino en las acciones del hagiógrafo. Para ello, tras resumir brevemente la vida de Tomás, tomaremos de eje un aspecto central de su pensamiento, el complejo eremítico-misional, para ver cómo es presentado y promocionado en la vita. Aspiramos a demostrar que más allá de la cercanía o lejanía con la protagonista que intenta retratar el pincel que la dibuja es igualmente importante, pues se refleja a sí mismo en la imagen retratada. En este sentido, las hagiografías ofrecen nuevo material para el estudio de los agentes que las producen y las usan.

This article delves into the hagiographic prose that Tomás Sánchez Dávila (1564-1627) dedicated to the Spanish visionary Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) and published in 1606. Beyond a qualification made a few decades ago, according to which Dávila's work is an ahistorical deformation of the historical figure of Teresa, we propose to observe Dávila's confessional propaganda from a different standpoint. In accordance with the guidelines of recent historiography, in the present study, it is the actions of the hagiographer, rather than the acts of the saint, that will retain our interest. Following a brief summary of the life of Tomás Sánchez Dávila, we shall choose as our axis a central aspect of his thought - the eremitical-missionary theme - to see how it is presented and promoted in the Vida. We shall strive to demonstrate that whether the protagonist be depicted at close range or from afar, the hand that draws the portrait remains important, for it is reflected in the image portrayed. In this sense, hagiographic sources offer new materials for the study of the agents that produce and use them.
