Restos óseos humanos y faunísticos: Su relación en el espacio mortuorio en contextos de cazadores-recolectores del humedal del Paraná inferior

Abstract

Los entierros de restos faunísticos y humanos en forma conjunta es una característica mundialmente conocida y ha sido interpretada desde diferentes ópticas, señalando vínculos sociales y simbólicos entre ambos como, por ejemplo, situaciones de animismo y connotaciones de prestigio. En el extremo meridional de humedal del Paraná inferior los contextos mortuorios suelen caracterizarse por la presencia de numerosos restos faunísticos, fragmentos cerámicos y artefactos (óseos y líticos) esparcidos tanto por encima como por debajo de las inhumaciones humanas. En trabajos que datan de principios del siglo XX esta relación entre elementos cotidianos y entierros fue señalada por algunosautores como producto de posibles rituales mortuorios. No obstante, existen ciertos elementos faunísticos que podrían estar transcendiendo dicha interpretación, conformando parte de lo que se conoce como acompañamiento mortuorio. En el área de estudio estas últimas interpretaciones han sido básicamente planteadas a partir de la presencia de cráneos y caninos modificados de carnívoros (cánidos y/o félidos) asociados a las inhumaciones humanas. En tal sentido, el objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la información preexistente vinculada con estas asociaciones y dar a conocer nuevos datos al respecto a partir de los resultados obtenidos en recientes excavaciones. Finalmente, se evalúan y discuten las potenciales relaciones que pudieron existir entre ciertos fenómenos ideacionales, los entierros humanos y los elementos faunísticos utilizados como acompañamiento mortuorio.

Burials of human and faunal remains together is a world renowned feature and has been interpreted from different perspectives, pointing out social and emotional links between both, for example, situations of animism and connotations of prestige. In the southern point of lower Paraná’s wetland, mortuary contexts are often characterized by the presence of many faunal remains, ceramic fragments and artifacts (bone and lithic) scattered above and below the human burials. In works dating from the beginning of the 20th century this relationship between everyday items and burials was designated by some authors as a result of possible mortuary rituals. However, there are certain faunal elements that could be transcending that interpretation, forming part of what is known as a mortuary accompaniment. In the study area, these recent interpretations have been basically raised from the presence of skulls and modified canines of canids and/or felids associated with human inhumations. In this sense, the objective of this work is analyzing pre-existing information linked with these possible associations and to present new data from the results of recent excavations. Finally, we evaluate the potential relationships that might have existed between certain ideational phenomena, human burials and faunal remains buried as mortuary accompaniment.
