Sexuality and Reproduction of Mugilidae

Abstract

Mullets are gonochoristic or bisexual fi sh: this implies that individuals are either males or females. Normally, adult females are bigger than males, but there is no sexual dimorphism and thus it is impossible to externally distinguish between sexes. With respect to reproductive mechanisms, the species of Mugilidae are oviparous, which involves the release of gametes into the water (usually coastal marine waters), with external fertilization and development.
