Mathematical Theory of Information (Shannon)

Abstract

The seminal work on the mathematical view of information is the paper .The Mathematical Theory of Communication (1948), where Claude Shannon introduces a precise formalism designed to solve certain specific technological problems in communication engineering (see also Shannon and Weaver 1949). This paper was immediately followed by many works of application to fields as radio, television and telephony. Shannon s theory offers precise results about the resources needed for optimal codification and error-free communication, and nowadays is a basic ingredient of the communication engineers training.
