Gramaticalización del aplicativo posicional -ʔot en toba

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia el proceso de gramaticalización del morfema aplicativo locativo -ʔot ‘debajo’ en la lengua toba (familia guaycurú) a partir de un corpus de diez horas de texto narrativo libre y cláusulas elicitadas representativas de tres dialectos hablados en la provincia del Chaco: lañaGashek, no’olGranaq y rapigeml’ek. Luego de diferenciar el comportamiento sintáctico y la combinatoria de dos clases de morfemas —contiguas en el sintagma verbal— que codifi can información locativa y direccional, se comparan cláusulas que muestran los diferentes matices semánticos que aporta el morfema aplicativo -ʔot según incorpore argumentos con el rol semántico LOCATIVO o META HUMANA. Por medio de mecanismos basados en la analogía y el reanálisis contextual, el morfema locativo pasa a indicar METAS HUMANAS con mayor jerarquía (pragmática, no ontológica) para reinterpretarse, en otros contextos, como un benefi ciario con características diferentes a las aportadas por el morfema aplicativo benefi ciario -em. Finalmente, el morfema locativo pierde su carácter aplicativo y —vía desemantización y erosión fonológica— se comporta como un marcador catafórico de prominencia optativo en textos narrativos

This paper studies the grammaticalization processes shown by the applicative locative morpheme -ʔot ‘under’ in Toba (Guaycuruan) from a corpus composed by ten hours of free narrative texts and elicited clauses which refl ects the speech of three Toba dialects spoken in Chaco province, Argentina: LañaGashek, No’olGranaq y Rapigeml’ek. First, two classes of morphemes that encode locative and directional information are distinguished by their syntactic behavior. Then, clauses are compared in order to distinguish the semantic information given by the morpheme -ʔot when it is used to apply LOCATIVE or HUMAN GOAL arguments. By grammaticalization mechanisms of analogy and contextual reanalysis, this locative morpheme encode —in new contexts— HUMAN GOAL arguments with more hierarchy (a pragmatic, not an onthological one) than the agent argument of the clause; but in other contexts, -ot encode arguments with benefi ciary meaning with clear differences with the semantic information encoded by the applicative benefi ciary morpheme -em. Finally, via semantic bleaching and phonological attrition, this originally locative morpheme looses its applicative behavior and it is used as an optative cataphoric marker of prominence in narrative texts
