Relatos de viaje e imaginarios geográficos en la Cosmografía Universal (1556) de Guillaume Le Testu: apuntes para una arqueología textual

Abstract

La Cosmografía Universal que en 1556 el navegante y cosmógrafo Guillaume Le Testu, dedica al Almirante de Francia, Gaspard de Coligny, contiene 56 planchas in-folio manuscritas de las cuales 16 representan tierras americanas. La dimensión política de esta obra así como su valor prospectivo permiten suponer que, más que en cualquier otro siglo, la traza de la totalidad del globo resultó un primer movimiento en la apropiación de espacios teóricamente existentes pero todavía por descubrir. En esta construcción renovada del Orbis Terrarum, la incidencia del relato de viaje en el imaginario geográfico sobre el Nuevo Mundo revistió particular importancia. En efecto, los insumos a partir de los cuales Le Testu elaboró una imagen sugestiva de América fueron resignificados por el Piloto en función de los intereses económicos y políticos de una Francia en expansión. Es sobre estos aspectos que indagará el artículo.

The Universal Cosmography that the sailor and cosmographer Guillaume Le Testu dedicated to Garpard de Coligny, Admiral of France, in 1556, bears 56 in-folio manuscript maps out of which 16 represent American land. The political dimension of this work, just as its prospective value, allow us to suppose that, more than in any other century, tracing the whole globe was the first step in the appropriation of areas that theoretically existed but were yet undiscovered. In this renewed construction of the Orbis Terrarum, the impact of travel narratives in the geographical imagery of the New World played, no doubt, a major role. In fact, the sources out of which Le Testu elaborated a suggestive image of America were re-signified in the light of the economic and political interests of an expansionist France. It is on these topics that the article will look into.
