Aportes para una historia de la metáfora del espejo: El horizonte logo-terapéutico de su tematización en Evagrio Póntico y otros autores tardoantiguos

Abstract

El presente estudio se inscribe en la línea de las investigaciones acerca del pensamiento de Evagrio Póntico que se vienen realizando en los últimos años. En este marco, nos interesa abordar un aspecto que se inscribe en una temática más amplia que ha recibido, con distintas modulaciones, la atención de los especialistas. Dicha temática podría ser denominada “Enfermedad y terapéutica del alma”. El aspecto que, en el marco de dicho tópico, nos interesa abordar aquí es el referente al uso de la metáfora del espejo. Dicha metáfora es introducida por nuestro autor a la hora de tematizar aquella terapéutica. Con ella procura explicar el modo en que la palabra puede curar. Se trata así de un estudio que puede ser contextualizado en el marco de la pre-historia de la psicoterapia verbal que se propusiera realizar Lain Entralgo al ocuparse del tópico de la curación por la palabra en la Antigüedad Clásica. En efecto, el abordaje evagriano constituye un nuevo y significativo mojón que, a la zaga de esa tradición que Lain desentrañara, aporta elementos novedosos al intentar comprender esa posible acción curativa de la palabra haciendo uso de la metáfora del espejo. De este modo el Pensador del Ponto sostendrá que la palabra para ser terapéutica debe ser como un espejo que el “gnóstico” (el hombre sabio que ha alcanzado las primicias de la salud y que cumple la función de terapeuta) es capaz de sostener frente al alma enferma. Un espejo que devuelve a esa alma una imagen de sí transformada y, a la vez, reconocible como propia.

The present paper is in line with previous investigations on Evagrius of Pontus’ thought (s. IV), that I carried out in the last years. In this context, I am interested in the study of one aspect of a broader topic which has received special attention of the scholars. This topic could be called “Disease and therapeutics of the soul”. I am particularly interested in studying the use of the metaphor of the mirror. This metaphor is introduced by Evagrius when reflecting on the therapy of the soul, when he explains the way in which the word is able to heal. Thus, my paper can be placed within the framework of the pre-history of verbal psychotherapy proposed by Lain Entralgo when he studies the healing by the word in Classical Antiquity. In fact, the evagrian approach constitutes a new and significant milestone that,in the steps of the tradition that Laín unraveled, provides novel elements to understand the possible curative properties of the word through the metaphor of the mirror. In this way, Evagrius asserts that the word, ir order to be therapeutic, must be like a mirror in which the “gnostic” (the wise man who has achieved the first fruits of health and who fulfills the role of therapist) is able to put in front of the sick soul. This mirror gives back to the soul an image of itself transformed and, at the same time, recognizable as its own.
