Empatía, reflexividad y juicio moral. Comentarios a "¿Es necesaria la empatía para la moralidad?" de Jesse Prinz

Abstract

En “Is Empathy Necessary for Morality?”, Jesse Prinz sostuvo, entre otras cosas, que la empatía no es en absoluto necesaria para formular un juicio moral. Mi intención en el presente trabajo es realizar una aproximación crítica a esta tesis, demostrando que cuando nos disponemos a estudiar el juicio moral tomando en consideración sus elementos constitutivos más salientes, llegamos a percatarnos de que la empatía podría jugar, después de todo, un papel sumamente relevante a la hora de determinar su verdad o falsedad. En años recientes, una respetable cantidad de autores ha destacado, emulando a H. Arendt, la valiosa contribución que las investigaciones de Kant en torno al juicio reflexivo representan para la filosofía práctica. Pues bien, según sugeriré, son trabajos como éstos los que nos permitirían comprender de qué manera la empatía podría intervenir en la correcta enunciación de nuestros juicios morales.

In “Is Empathy Necessary for Morality?” Jesse Prinz held the view that empathy is not necessary for making moral judgments. The aim of this paper is to criticize this thesis, by showing that when we have to study the moral judgment considering its most salient constituent elements, we come to realize that empathy could play, after all, a highly relevant role in determining its truth or falsity. In recent years, a respectable number of authors, emulating H. Arendt, highlighted how valuable Kant’s investigations around the reflective judgment are for practical philosophy. According to what I am going to suggest, these are precisely the kinds of contributions that will allow us to understand how empathy is supposed to intervene in the correct enunciation of our moral judgments.
