Los jesuitas en los confines del Imperio. La evangelización en Villa Rica del Espíritu Santo (Paraguay, 1589-1675)

Abstract

Los primeros jesuitas que llegaron al Paraguay lo hicieron desde la Asistencia de Portugal, con el consentimiento del provincial del Perú, creando las residencias de Asunción y Villa Rica como base de sus operaciones misionales. Tuvieron contacto directo con los actores de aquel tiempo y se expusieron a sus enfrentamientos, de los que en ocasiones fueron mediadores. A través de fuentes documentales, relatos de viajeros y una seleccionada bibliografía, abordamos el trabajo desde el campo temático de la evangelización temprana de los jesuitas en la región, quienes se situaron y comprendieron lo que significó una zona de conflicto, por la utilización de la mano de obra indígena, asumiendo causas y consecuencias.

The first Jesuits who arrived in Paraguay did so from the Assistance of Portugal, with the consent of the provincial of Peru, creating the residences of Asunción and Villa Rica as the basis of their missionary operations. They had direct contact with the actors of that time and were exposed to their confrontations, of which they were sometimes mediators. Through documentary sources, traveler stories and a selected bibliography, we approach the work from the field of the early evangelization of the Jesuits in the region, who placed themselves and understood what a conflict zone meant, by using the indigenous labor, assuming causes and consequences
