Las versátiles proteínas zinc fingers

Abstract

Los dominios zinc fingers son elementos estructurales muy estables cuya particularidad es la coordinación de uno o más átomos de zinc a través de residuos de cisteínas e histidinas. Los zinc fingers son uno de los motivos más encontrados en las proteínas, y esto es de gran relevancia ya que por medio de los mismos participan en interacciones específicas con distintas macromoléculas (proteínas y ácidos nucleicos). Teniendo en cuenta las características de estas estructuras, y la variedad de funciones que cumplen, muchos grupos de investigación se dedican hoy a utilizar estos motivos para estudiar interacciones entre macromoléculas o como herramientas en biología molecular.

The zinc finger domain is a very stable structural element whose hallmark is the coordination of a zinc atom by several amino acid residues, usually cysteines and histidines. These structural elements are associated with protein-nucleic acid recognition as well as protein-protein interactions. Zinc finger proteins have fascinated many research groups because of their modular assembly and broad range of biological functions. One can logically construct zinc finger proteins that bind virtually any gene in any cell. Thus, the zinc fingers proteins represent novel and promising tools in the field of biomedical research.
