Literatura en estado de archivo- Prolegómenos Americanos

Abstract

El vínculo entre lectura y edición ha conducido, en buena medida guiado por cierta “ilusión genética”, a la crítica y a la teoría literaria hacia el archivo, como práctica y como noción. Este movimiento, en las dos últimas décadas del siglo XX, no sólo se consolidó en el campo americano notoriamente, remozando categorías como “canon” o “corpus” y cuestionando la “esteticidad” e historicidad “metodológica” de sus objetos, sino que al afectar sensiblemente el vínculo entre lectura y teoría se estableció como un problema definitivamente crítico, esto es: un problema de la “crítica”. Al mismo tiempo, al privilegiar una geopolítica (Norte/Sur) y una circulación crítica (a la vez retrospectiva e introspectiva) desiguales del archivo, este movimiento alentó y configuró –en el umbral de siglos– una serie de cuestiones clave, tan filológicas como institucionales, tan literarias como políticas, que –en el siglo XXI– todavía organizan, predisponen o resisten los estudios literarios. De ese movimiento, de su inscripción “crítica” americana y de su relevancia actual para la distinción de problemas y proyectos literarios (editoriales, teóricos e institucionales) se ocupa el siguiente ensayo, o sus prolegómenos.

The link between reading and editing has driven literary theory and criticism, to a large extent guided by certain “genetic illusion”, towards the archive, both as a practice and as a notion. This movement, in the last two decades of the 20th century, has consolidated notoriously in the American field, renovating categories such as “canon” or “corpus” and questioning the “estheticity” and methodological “historicity” of its objects. In addition, by noticeably affecting the link between reading and theory, it has established itself as a definitely critical problem, that is: a problem of the “critics”. At the same time, by favoring a (North/South) geopolitics and an uneven critical circulation of the archive (retrospective and introspective, at the same time), this movement has encouraged and configured – between centuries– a series of key notions, so much philological as institutional, so much literary as political, that –in the 21st century– literary studies still organize, influence or resist. This next essay takes on this movement, its American “critical” inscription, and its current relevance to the distinction of problems and literary projects (editorial, theoretical and institutional).
