Catolicismo y condición femenina: representaciones de género sobre la maternidad y la domesticidad en la prensa del sudoeste bonaerense argentino a principios del siglo XX

Abstract

En el presente artículo se identifican y describenlos significados atribuidos a la maternidad y a ladomesticidad analizando las representaciones degénero en el discurso de la prensa confesional queaparece en Bahía Blanca y circula por su zona de influencia en las tres primeras décadas delsiglo XX. Se sostiene que los(as) católicos(as) queescriben en la prensa comparten el concepto dediferencia sexual dominante y abordan el problema de la condición femenina centrándose enlas nociones de domesticidad y maternidad, quealuden al papel de reproducción material y biológica de la sociedad en el marco de la divisiónsexual del trabajo. Sin embargo, algunos de elloslas reformulan frente a las transformaciones dela época que impactan sobre la familia, comoresultado de lo cual expresan ideas que, si bien notienen en sí mismas la intención de subvertir lasrelaciones de género, avalan ciertas mutacionesde signo moderno.

This paper identifies and describes the meanings ascribed to motherhood and domesticityby analyzing gender representations in the discourse of the confessional press that appears inBahia Blanca and travels through its zone ofinfluence during the first three decades of the20th century. It is argued that Catholic menand women who write in the press share theconcept of dominant sexual difference andaddress the problem of the female condition byfocusing on the notions of domesticity andmotherhood, which refer to the role of the biological and material reproduction of society inthe context of the sexual division of labor. However, some of them reformulate them inresponse to the epochal changes that haveimpacted the family, as a result of which theyexpress ideas which, while not in themselvesintended to subvert gender relations, endorsecertain modern mutations.
