En América Latina el proceso globalizador se desarrolla correlativamente a ciertas transformaciones peculiares de los entramados religiosos. Una de ellas es el crecimiento sostenido de los grupos evangélicos de corte neo-pentecostal. En este contexto, surge la pregunta por los factores exógenos y endógenos que colocan a esta denominación protestante en el centro de la renovación espiritual de nuestro tiempo. El concepto de afinidad electiva nos permitirá indagar en el juego de correspondencias que se establecen entre el Evangelio y dos grandes fuerzas vinculadas a la globalización: la doctrina neo-liberal y el posmodernismo. La primera parte del artículo aborda la estructura de interpelación del discurso religioso relativo a las formas de sufrimiento social. La segunda parte analiza la incorporación de los códigos culturales propios del consumo y la producción de mercancías. Por último, el trabajo se propone captar la intensidad de ambas relaciones, distinguiendo distintos grados de afinidad electiva entre ellas.
