José Imbelloni y la formación de un lectorado americanista

Abstract

Este artículo se centra en la Biblioteca Humanior del americanista moderno, el proyecto editorial que dirige José Imbelloni entre 1936 y 1959. El trabajo se pregunta a quiénes interpela Imbelloni como posibles lectores, qué concepto de americanismo forja, y cómo define la antropología como disciplina (y a las alteridades sociales como objeto de estudio). Esta colección busca formar no solo a los futuros antropólogos, sino también a un público culto y/o universitario más amplio, para sensibilizarlo respecto del legado arqueológico americano, respecto del legado racial indígena del país y del continente, y respecto del folclore vivo, entre otros temas. Interpelando a ese doble público lector, Humanior expande la americanística en el mercado masivo de esta etapa. Para ello, descansa en las condiciones creadas por otros textos dentro y fuera del campo antropológico argentino, como los escritos de Ricardo Rojas entre los años veinte y treinta. Pero, a la vez, Imbelloni reacciona, desde una posición cientificista, contra toda idealización de la naturaleza y el hombre americanos, incluyendo la visión romántica de la alteridad y las reivindicaciones indigenistas de carácter emancipatorio en el presente.

This paper focuses on the “Biblioteca Humanior del americanista moderno,” the editorial project directed by José Imbelloni between 1936 and 1959, primarily by asking whom Imbelloni interpellates as possible readers, which concept of Americanism takes shape, and why he defines anthropology as a discipline, with all of the social alterities that represent his object of study. Imbelloni’s collection aims to cultivate not only future anthropologists, but also a wider educated public sensitive to the American archeological legacy, to the aboriginal racial legacy of Argentina and the continent, and to living folklore, among other subjects. By interpellating that double reader, “Humanior” expands what is American in the massive market of the period by resting on conditions created by other texts inside and outside Argentine anthropology, including the writings of Ricardo Rojas in the 1920s and 1930s. At the same time, Imbelloni reacts, from a scientific position, against any idealization of American nature and human beings, including the romantic vision of alterity and aboriginal vindications that have an emancipatory character in the present.
