Acción materna y acción social: el caso estadounidense

Abstract

El objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en analizar las principales configuraciones teóricas y prácticas del maternalismo social y político tal como este se produjo en los Estados Unidos de América entre fines del s. XIX y principios del s. XX, para reaparecer nuevamente entre fines del s. XX y principios del s. XXI. En particular, intentaremos mostrar la alianza entre la acción materna ejercida en los límites privados de la familia nuclear y la acción materna extendida al ámbito sociopolítico de la comunidad local y nacional, alianza de la cual ha nacido, a nuestro juicio, la acción y el trabajo social estadounidense.

This paper aims to analyzing the main theoretical and practical forms of social and political maternalism as it occurred in the United States between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, and again between the late twentieth century and the early twentyfirst century. In particular, I will try to show the alliance between maternal action exerted in the private boundaries of the nuclear family, and the maternal care extended to the socio-political context of local and national community, alliance of which was born, in my view, the American social action and social work.
