Marechal y la Vanguardia: un proyecto para imaginar la nación

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia los tres primeros poemarios y la primera novela, Adán Buenosayres, de Leopoldo Marechal. Se analiza especialmente el dispositivo de la invención como operatoria distintiva de la vanguardia, desde una perspectiva comparatística con los primeros textos de Jorge Luis Borges. Se supone que los jóvenes Borges y Marechal ponen a funcionar un dispositivo de invención que implica la imaginación de contornos geográficos y atmósferas de ensoñación para poner en acto el programa criollista-vanguardista compartido de dotar de imaginación a la nación. Se privilegia una metodología centrada en el análisis textual para demostrar el modo en que ambos poetas realizan este proyecto en el marco de los cambios sociales que trae aparejado, principalmente, el fenómeno de la inmigración entre 1920 y 1930. El artículo permitió concluir que hay una sucesión entre los primeros poemarios y la novela de Marechal, dada la continuidad de los principales mecanismos para inventar imágenes sobre la nación, mucho de los cuales son compartidos por el proyecto de Borges. Entre ellos se destacan: el paralelismo entre la labor del poeta y el creador, el uso de imágenes oníricas y la metáfora del viaje para crear ―mitologías‖ emplazadas en espacios fronterizos de la ciudad.

This study takes in Leopoldo Marechal's first three poetry collections and his first novel, Adán Buenosayres. In particular, it focuses on invention as a mode characteristic of the avant-garde, and takes a comparativist approach, reading Marechal's poetry alongside Jorge Luis Borges's first publications. Our hypothesis is that as young men both Marechal and Borges employ a mode of invention that entails the imagination of geographic contours and oneiric ambience as a means of carrying out their shared criollo-avant-garde program of imbuing the nation with imagination. The methodology adopted here is that of close reading, with a view to showing that both poets' engagement with this project is closely linked to the social changes brought about by, among other things, mass immigration to Argentina in the years 1920-1930. The article argues that there is continuity between Marechal's first collections of poetry and his first novel, given the recurrence of the principal means of inventing images of the nation, many of which are equally present in Borges's work. Among these we might highlight the parallelism between the work of the poet and the creator; the use of oneiric images; and the metaphor of the journey in order to create ―mythologies‖ set in the margins of the city.
