Tomás de Aquino ante la gramática: ¿ciencia especulativa o arte liberal?

Abstract

La extensa tradición de la enseñanza de las artes liberales en el pensamiento occidental se remonta en sus orígenes a la Grecia clásica. La Edad Media asume esta herencia en clave cristiana alcanzando incluso el Renacimiento humanista. Uno de los puntos de inflexión en dicha historia es el siglo XIII debido a la lectura y comentario de las nuevas obras de Aristóteles. Ahora bien, en este marco histórico la posición especulativa de Tomás de Aquino respecto del papel de las artes liberales ha sido prácticamente nulo. Sin embargo es posible llevar a cabo una cuidadosa reconstrucción de las mismas siguiendo la dispersa opinión del Aquinate figurada en sus textos. En este caso se emprende dicha tarea para con la gramática o primer arte del trivium.

The long tradition in education of liberal arts in the Western Thought goes back in its origins to Classic Greece. This legacy was taken in the Middle Ages as Christian key affecting even the Humanist Renaissance. One of the turning points in that history is the thirteenth century due to the reading and commentary of the new works of Aristotle. Thus, in this historical setting the speculative position of Thomas Aquinas regarding the role of the liberal arts has been practically nonexistent. However it is possible to carry out a careful reconstruction of the same subject following the dispersed opinion of Aquinas in his texts. In this case the task is to consider the grammar or the first art of trivium.
