Pequeña historia de la fotografía como espectáculo

Abstract

La historiografía clásica ha tendido a minimizar las capacidades espectaculares de la fotografía analizándola desde sus características documentales o artísticas, pero sin vincularla en absoluto con los variados espectáculos basados en la producción de ilusiones, que dominaron gran parte del divertimento popular durante el siglo XIX. En este ensayo proponemos trazar algunos principios fundamentales para pensar una historia de la fotografía como espectáculo. Focalizándonos en la producción fotográfica circulante en América Latina entre fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, la analizaremos bajo el prisma de ese potencial ilusionista, asimilado más tarde por el cine, a partir de cuatro ejes principales: la puesta en escena, las «atracciones», la búsqueda de movimiento y el emergente montaje narrativo.

Classic historiography has tended to minimize the spectacular capability of photography, analizing it either from its documentary or artistic features, without even relating it to the various shows based on the production of illusion that formed part of the popular amusement of 19th century society. This essay intends to lay down some of the fundamental principles of the history of photography as spectacle. By focusing on the photographic production circulating in Latin America during the turn of the century, the essay proposes to analize it from the point of view of its illusionist potential, later absorved by cinema, as from four different perspectives: the mise en scène, the «attractions», the search of movement and the emergence of narrative montage.
