Lo nacional y lo mestizo. Una lectura sobre las intervenciones de José de Mesa y Teresa Gisbert en el ámbito cultural paceño (1952-1956)

Abstract

Este artículo recupera la actuación de los historiadores José de Mesa y Teresa Gisbert en el contexto político-cultural posterior a la Revolución Boliviana y su participación en organismos oficiales mediante publicaciones y otros proyectos asociados a la difusión del arte y la arquitectura. La principal línea de lectura subraya la articulación dada entre los recursos historiográficos provistos por un área de investigación en desarrollo -los estudios artísticos americanistas- y las políticas culturales impulsadas desde el ámbito oficial. Sostenemos, entre otros puntos, que el mestizaje como construcción ideológica resultó clave para encauzar una historia del arte para la región al mismo tiempo que fortalecía discursos oficiales interesados en la unidad nacional.

This article retakes the action of historians José de Mesa and Teresa Gisbert in the political and cultural context after the Bolivian Revolution and their participation in official bodies through publications and other projects associated with the dissemination of art and architecture. The article’s main reading underlines the articulation between historiographical resources provided by a developing research area –the Latin Americanist artistic studies– and cultural policies promoted by the governmental level. We argue that, among other points, race mixture as an ideological construction was a key element to guide the art history of the region while boosting official speeches interested in national unity.
