El judío espectral como dispositivo pedagógico en el discurso de Juan Crisóstomo

Abstract

En varias de sus homilías, Juan Crisóstomo, presbítero de Antioquía entre 386 y 398, utilizó una serie de tópoi propios de la literatura adversus iudaeos para referirse a los judíos. Este judío construido no tenía la finalidad de reflejar de manera fidedigna al colectivo hebreo de la ciudad. En realidad, este judío espectral se configuró como un dispositivo pedagógico al servicio del presbítero para instruir a su feligresía sobre qué era ser un verdadero cristiano. En Antioquía, donde eran varias las opciones religiosas a las que una persona podía recurrir, Crisóstomo intenta delimitar las fronteras identitarias del cristianismo niceno.

In several of his homilies, John Chrysostom, presbyter of Antioch between 386 and 398, used a series of topoi from the adversus iudaeos literature to refer to the Jews. This constructed jew did not have the purpose of faithfully reflecting the Jewish inhabitants of the city. Actually, this “spectral Jew” was configured as a pedagogical device at the service of the presbyter to instruct his parishioners on what it was to be a true Christian. In Antioch, where there were several religious options to which a person could opt, the presbyter tried to delimit the identity borders of Nicene Christianity.
