Consumo de tabaco en estudiantes de psicología de la Universidad Nacional de San Luis

Abstract

Numerosas investigaciones mencionan el problema del tabaquismo en diversos ámbitos. El presente trabajo evalúa la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Nacional de San Luis; cantidad de sujetos que probaron, edad de inicio de consumo, prevalencia de consumo según género y edad, grado de dependencia física de la nicotina y total de alumnos que está pensando en dejar de fumar. El diseño de la investigación fue un estudio de tipo descriptivo, y la muestra no probabilística estuvo conformada por 150 estudiantes de Psicología de la UNSL. Se aplicó el Test de Dependencia de la Nicotina de Fagerström y la Encuesta Mundial de Estudiantes de Profesiones de la Salud. El 30% del estudiantado consumió tabaco recientemente, la edad de inicio de consumo fue de 11 a 17 años, más del 50% no estaban pensando en dejarlo, y la mayoría no presentó elevada dependencia física de la nicotina.

Numerous studies mention the problem of smoking in several areas. The present study evaluated tobacco use and prevalence in psychology students of the National University of San Luis. The specific objectives were to examine the amount of subjects that tried cigarettes, their starting age of consumption, consumption prevalence by gender and age, survey the degree of physical nicotine dependence and find out the total number of students who are thinking about quitting. The research design was a descriptive study and the non probabilistic sample was conformed by 150 undergraduate students of the Psychology Program of the National University of San Luis. The Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) were applied. The results showed that 30% of the students used tobacco recently, with an age of onset from 11 to 17 years, and more than 50% were not thinking of quitting.
