“Ved en trono la noble igualdad”: el concepto de igualdad en el discurso político rioplatense (1810-1813)

Abstract

Este artículo indaga en el discurso igualitarista y los usos del concepto de igualdad en el Río de la Plata entre 1810 y 1813, a partir del análisis de la prensa periódica y de otras fuentes del período como proclamas y decretos del gobierno revolucionario. Buscamos examinar la red de conceptos, imágenes y metáforas vinculadas a dicha noción y sus cambios a lo largo del período. Interrogar también sobre qué clase de igualdad se podía plantear, practicar e imaginar en una sociedad estamental en guerra y revolución, donde la movilización popular se asentaba, en gran medida, sobre la base de novedosos principios políticos y el cuestionamiento a las estructuras y prácticas del orden colonial. Partimos de la hipótesis que existieron diversas concepciones sobre qué era la igualdad, no sólo entre las facciones ilustradas rioplatenses, sino en relación a las aspiraciones que impulsaron la participación política de los sectores populares, siendo este concepto un espacio de constante disputa.

This article inquire in the egalitarian discourse and the uses of the concept of equality in the Río de la Plata between 1810 and 1813, based on the analysis of the periodical press and other sources of the period such as proclamations and decrees of the revolutionary government. We seek to examine the network of concepts, images and metaphors linked to this notion and its changes throughout the period. We also wonder about what kind of equality could be proposed, practiced and imagined in a stamental society in war and revolution, where popular pobilization was based on novel political principles and the questioning of the etructures and practices of the colonial order. We start from the hypothesis that there were different conceptions about what equality was, not only between the rioplatense enlightened factions, but also in relation to the aspirations that promoted the political participation of the popular sectors, this concept being a space of constant dispute.
